Sberbank warns of new scheme for stealing money by fraudsters
Today, about half of the money that fraudsters steal from accounts in Russian banks is made using contactless payment systems on smartphones.
According to him, in 80% of current incidents, attackers use two main mechanisms for withdrawing stolen funds: mobile payment systems for contactless payments and transfers between victims’ accounts.
At the same time, as the expert points out, if a person does not yet have a mobile payment system application installed on their smartphone, criminals persuade them to install it and link their existing bank card to the device.
The fraudster then provides the victim with their card details and a confirmation code via SMS. The victim then enters this into the contactless payment app themselves. They then deposit their own and borrowed money via an ATM onto the fraudster's card linked to the app.
As a result, depositing money from such a card is identified as an action committed by the owner of the mobile device, but in fact the card is in the hands of criminals, Kuznetsov explained.
