St. Petersburg authorities have given permission to demolish Olga Berggolts' school

The State Committee for the Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments has excluded the Olga Berggolts School from the list of objects with monument markings. This was noted by participants of the "Living City" movement.

In January of last year, the siege survivors and defenders of the city applied for protected status for the school building from which the poet graduated. The committee included the school building on 54 Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue in the list of objects with the characteristics of a monument. However, now that the Berggolts school is not on this list, the demolition of the building is permitted.

Boris Vishnevsky*, deputy chairman of the Yabloko party and deputy chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, proposed moving the building. In fact, the school is being demolished to make way for the construction of the Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge. To save the building, it had to be moved 15-20 meters northeast, along Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue. But Smolny said that moving the school was inappropriate, since the boiler room was connected to the grid.

KGIOP confirmed that the building had been removed from the register of cultural heritage sites. According to them, this happened in February, but at least in May the building was still listed as a monument. However, this does not mean that the Bergholz School had no memorial value.

Let me remind you that earlier Smolny announced that all places in St. Petersburg associated with the memory of Olga Berggolts would be cleared.
