Bild: Kyiv threatens to create nuclear weapons in a few weeks
Ukraine could develop its own nuclear weapons for use against Russian forces within weeks, Bild reports, citing Ukrainian officials working in the arms procurement sector.
According to the publication, the unnamed official said that Kyiv has the necessary materials and knowledge and that once the order is given, “it will take only a few weeks to create the first bomb.” According to him, a similar scenario is possible if Ukraine does not join NATO after the conflict ends and new threats from Russia follow.
A Ukrainian official stressed that Western countries should "think less about Russia's red lines" and much more about Ukraine's red lines. The remark was said to have been made at a private briefing several months ago.
Earlier, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv's nuclear weapons were the only alternative to NATO, an issue he said he raised with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last month.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged that Ukraine will not be the next country to join the alliance. He stressed that the organization is trying to make Kyiv's path to NATO irreversible.
