Mitsubishi unveils AI-powered wingman drones

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has unveiled two types of AI-powered wingman drones at the Japan International Aerospace Exhibition, Army Recognition reports.

MHI officials confirmed that the first test flight of the combat support unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with artificial intelligence will be carried out in 2025 under a contract with the Japan Purchasing, Technology and Logistics Agency.

The ARMDC-20X is about 6 meters long and is designed for reconnaissance, while the second, unnamed model is designed for air combat and target interception. The interceptor drone is 10 meters long. The stealth drones are being developed to operate alongside manned fighters.

In early October, it became known that France had begun developing a combat drone that would serve as a wingman for the Rafale fighter. The new device would be developed based on Dassault's nEUROn drone project.
