EU Council extends chemical weapons sanctions for a year

The Council of the European Union (EU) has extended by one year the restrictions on individuals and legal entities under the sanctions regime against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. Thus, the provisions will be in force until October 16, 2025, RIA Novosti reports in connection with the statement.

There are currently 25 people on the European chemical weapons sanctions list. They include seven defendants linked to the Syrian government, four reportedly linked to the 2018 poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal, and all the others in the European Union allegedly involved in the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. The restrictions also apply to three organizations: Two of them are registered in Syria and one in Russia.

At the same time, Russia has repeatedly denied its involvement in the Skripal and Navalny cases and claimed that it was a planned provocation. According to Moscow representatives, they were aimed at discrediting Russia. The Russian side noted that there is no evidence of guilt.

Under the sanctions, European assets subject to restrictions must be frozen. They are also prohibited from entering the European Union. At the same time, citizens of European countries are prohibited from transferring assets included in the sanctions list.

Earlier, the European Union (EU) approved a new mechanism of sanctions against Russia for alleged "hybrid behavior." This concerns specific "destabilizing actions" of the Russian Federation abroad. Accordingly, restrictions are being introduced on "hybrid behavior" and "election interference."
