The Kushtepa District Court of the Fergana Region in eastern Uzbekistan found a 51-year-old man guilty of participating in military operations in Ukraine as part of the Russian Armed Forces (RF Armed Forces). The man was sentenced to five years in a general regime penal colony.
"Admits that a resident of the Kushtepinsky district, A.Kh., born in 1973, committed a crime under Part 1 of Article 154 (see Mercenary activity — URA.RU) and sentences him to 5 years of imprisonment. It is reported that the court took into account the man's sincere confession, reflections and cooperation with the investigation.
According to investigators, in May 2023, a citizen of Uzbekistan came to Russia to earn money. After that, he signed a one-year contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, joined the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces, completed a military training course and was sent to the combat zone. The man was wounded in the SVO region of Ukraine and after treatment decided to return to his homeland.
Earlier, the Migration Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia supported the regulation of the rights of foreign participants of the SVO from neighboring countries who were subject to criminal punishment in their homeland for participating in military operations against the RF Armed Forces. He immediately applied for Russian citizenship. He will remain in the country until a decision is made on his application, and he is not in danger of deportation.
Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting citizenship to participants in military operations. Now, foreigners who signed a contract to serve in the Russian Armed Forces before undergoing military training have the right to receive a simple Russian passport. According to RT, since the beginning of 2024, more than 3,000 foreign citizens who participated in special military operations in Ukraine have received Russian citizenship.
