«Известия»: в России снизилось число отказов от детей в роддомах
In Russia, few women leave their children in maternity hospitals after giving birth. This was reported by Izvestia, citing statistics from the Ministry of Health.
Thus, the share of abandoned babies among all those born in 2023 was 0.09% (0.11% in 2021, 0.10% in 2022). Since 2012, the number of abandoned babies in maternity hospitals has decreased by 89% and 24% since 2022, respectively. Only a few babies were abandoned in different parts of the country.
In the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, not a single newborn was left unattended in 2014, 2022, 2023 and 2024. In 2014, the maternity hospitals of the Chelyabinsk Region had the largest number of abandoned children. The top three leaders in terms of reducing the number of abandonments were Komi, Arkhangelsk Region and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.
Olga Shikhova, head of the project “Prevention of Newborn Abandonment” of the Orphan Aid Foundation, explained that most Russian women abandon their children due to financial difficulties, lack of support from loved ones, and psychological trauma.
Dmitry Grigoryev, a methodologist at the Social Fund for Combating Orphanhood, explained that preventing child abandonment in maternity hospitals is possible in 30-60% of cases. However, in 2014, only the "deniers" were not even interviewed. The woman only had to fill out the paperwork and leave.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Boris Chernyshev (LDPR) proposed holding a lottery for newborns throughout Russia and raffling off 10 apartments every month.
