NHL Names Ovechkin First Star of the Week
Washington Capitals Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin has been named the National Hockey League (NHL) Star of the Week. He has scored five goals and made four assists in four games in seven days.
The Russian is quickly closing the gap on Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading scorer. They are currently separated by 34 goals. Washington is fourth in the Eastern Conference with 16 points.
The second star of the week is Carolina Hurricanes' Czech forward Martin Necas, who scored 9 points (3+6) in 3 games. The third star was Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby, who scored 7 points (4+3) in three games.
