Russians warned about the dangers of sleeping with curtains open

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Brain Institute of the Center for Neurological Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences Sergei Ilarioshkin stated that sleeping with open curtains or with a night light on in the bedroom is harmful to brain health. In a conversation with KP.RU, he warned Russians about the dangers of so-called light pollution.

Light pollution is light from outdoor advertising or street lamps that penetrates through windows with open curtains, night lights that are not turned off, energy-saving light bulbs and lights from appliances. According to him, a new study from Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, USA) shows that sleeping in such conditions significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Illarioshkin noted that “light pollution” is especially dangerous for the brain health of people under 65. This factor has a greater impact than other long-studied causes of Alzheimer’s disease, including alcohol abuse, depression, obesity, diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease. The expert warned: “In the case of patients who experienced “light pollution” at night while sleeping with the lights on before the age of 65, this was one of the representative factors.”

According to scientists, night lighting disrupts the sleep-wake cycle, which is a huge stress for the body. Normal, full rest and recovery are possible only in the dark. He emphasized that the presence of a light source changes the structure of sleep, causing various disturbances in the brain.

Earlier, osteopath Dmitry Simkin identified the worst sleeping positions: According to him, one of them is in his stomach. He explained that in this position, a person literally turns his head to the side and twists his neck.
