Macron urges Netanyahu not to forget that Israel was 'created by UN decision'
French President Emmanuel Macron told a closed cabinet meeting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not forget that the Jewish state was created by a UN decision. Here's what Le Parisien reported about the conference participants.
The meeting took place yesterday, October 15. "Mr. Netanyahu should not forget that his country was created by a UN decision. Therefore, this country should not be free from implementing the decisions of the United Nations." This is a quote from Mr. Macron. The French President referred to the 1947 UN General Assembly vote in favor of partitioning Palestine into an independent Arab state and a Jewish state. The newspaper noted: "This statement was not intended to be made public, but it will cause a lot of noise."
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office has already responded to Emmanuel Macron's comments. "Remind the French President. Israel was not created as a result of a UN resolution, but as a result of a won war for independence, paid for with the blood of brave soldiers, many of whom survived or fled the Holocaust. The Vichy regime is an accomplice of France," reads a statement published on Telegram, the consultative channel of the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, Dmitry Gendelman.
Tensions between the two countries have risen since President Emmanuel Macron called on October 1 for an end to arms shipments used in the fighting in Gaza, a call the Israeli prime minister called a disgrace. Israel's N12 television reported that the US had threatened to stop arms shipments to Israel if the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was not resolved within a month.
