Internet speed testing service Speedtest may be banned in Russia
Russia may ban the use of the American Internet speedometer SpeedTest. The State Duma and the FSB supported this proposal, according to a response from the House of Representatives and law enforcement agencies to the International Academy of Communications (IAC).
"The State Duma and the FSB supported the proposal to ban Russian operators from using the SpeedTest Internet speedometer from the American company Ookla. Legislators and security officials agreed that operators should use Russian programs instead of foreign analogues," Izvestia writes, citing the letter.
Experts interviewed by the newspaper believe that Ookla, the company that owns this service, may share information about the communication networks it manages with foreign intelligence agencies, increasing the risk of cyberattacks. Foreign analogues may also be unsafe and cause claims from government agencies. Therefore, according to experts, it is better to use Russian services.
State Duma deputy Pyotr Tolstoy told Izvestia that in the context of special military operations, there should be no potentially malicious software on the networks of Russian telecom operators. He also noted that he supports the ban.
