Kazakhstan Decides Not to Join BRICS for Now

Kazakhstan has decided not to join BRICS for now.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has received an offer to join BRICS, but Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for membership in the near future, the president's press secretary Berik Uli said, RBK reports. According to him, the proposals are being considered by the head of state and analyzed by the relevant departments from the point of view of Kazakhstan's national interests under his leadership. At the same time, Tokayev now gives priority to the UN as a "universal, non-alternative organization in which all current international problems can and should be discussed," Uali said. Tokayev's press secretary also confirmed the Kazakh president's plans to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, where he plans to speak at an expanded meeting of the organization on October 24.

Syria, Thailand, Malaysia, Azerbaijan and Turkey have also announced their intention to join BRICS. According to Bloomberg sources, further expansion of the group could be discussed at the Kazan summit. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in June that the organization had decided to take a pause on the issue of new members to “digest” the new arrivals.

BRICS was created in June 2006 within the framework of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. This organization is the most dynamically developing large national informal association. Currently, the association includes 10 countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Ethiopia.
