WHO warns of 20-hour power outages in Ukraine

The report emphasizes that the energy systems of Ukrainian cities are interconnected and often control not only electricity, but also heat and hot water. According to TASS, the situation is becoming very difficult, since power outages can affect the comfort and safety of residents, especially in winter, when temperatures drop significantly.

WHO also notes that such prolonged power outages could cause problems for health facilities and other critical infrastructure. The organization calls on the Ukrainian authorities and the international community to pay special attention to preparations for winter and possible power outages to minimize risks to the population.

In August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised to commission 1 GW of reserve power generation capacity by the end of the year, but the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy said there would be no time to implement the plan, Vzglyad newspaper reported. Sergey Kovalenko, director of the Ukrainian energy company YASNO, which is a shareholder in DTEK, warned that power outages could be introduced in Ukraine in the winter, leaving residents without electricity for 12 hours a day.
