The State Duma has spoken out against a tax on childlessness

There is no need for a childlessness tax in modern Russia, said Alexey Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.

"In the Soviet Union there was a tax on childlessness. A tax on childlessness today is absurd, and I hope that it will never be introduced in modern Russia," RIA Novosti reports Zhuravlev as saying.

According to Zhuravlev, if the material well-being of Russian families improves, they will have more children. He added that providing housing for young families is important for improving demographic indicators.

Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said that it was necessary to analyze the USSR's experience with the childlessness tax. He added that the tax does not have a significant impact on the demographic situation, RT reports.
