Ukraine Calls on Brazil to Arrest Putin at G20 Summit

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin has asked Brazilian authorities to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Reuters reported.

"I would like to emphasize once again that the Brazilian authorities, as a party to the Rome Statute, are obliged to arrest him if he dares to come," Kostin told the agency. The Prosecutor General stressed that the international community must unite to bring President Putin to justice.

According to the publication, information about a possible visit by President Putin to the G20 summit has caused a reaction from the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine. He believes that Brazil must comply with its obligations under the Rome Statute and the International Criminal Court.

Earlier, Ukraine asked Mongolia and Turkmenistan to arrest Vladimir Putin. Kyiv claims that it is obliged to execute the arrest warrant for the Russian leader simply because the country recognizes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). At the same time, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that Moscow does not consider the ICC's decision on the arrest warrant for the Russian president important.
