IDF shows Hamas leader fighting off drone with stick before death
The video shows Sinwar throwing what appears to be a stick at the drone. Ynet reported that his identity was confirmed by dental records. Prime Minister Netanyahu called Sinwar's killing "the beginning of the end of the war."
In the video, the disguised man was sitting on a chair when he noticed the drone, took out a stick-like object and threw it at the drone.
The IDF announced on the evening of October 18 that it would likely kill 61-year-old Sinwar. The Israeli military said three militants had been killed in the Gaza Strip, one of whom may be the head of the Hamas politburo. Foreign Minister Israel Katz later confirmed that the man killed was Sinwar.
He died when a building in the Rafah area collapsed after being shelled, Ynet reported. According to the publication, Sinwar's identity was confirmed using dental records.
Sinwar, one of Hamas's founders, has headed the organisation's politburo since August. The Guardian named him as one of the main architects of the attack on Israel on October 7 last year. Sinwar spent more than 20 years in Israeli prisons before being released in a prisoner swap in 2011.
He took over as head of the group's political bureau in late July after his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an explosion at his home in Tehran while attending the inauguration of new President Masoud Fezeshkian.
Last September, Israel eliminated Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of another Islamist group, Lebanon's Hezbollah, in an airstrike on his underground headquarters outside Beirut.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue to attack his enemies. “There is no place in Iran or the Middle East that is beyond the reach of Israel’s long arm, and today you already know how true that is,” the prime minister said.
