Government to ban three types of PET packaging from September 2025

The government has introduced a ban on the use of three types of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging materials from September 1, 2025. The order was published on the Legal Information Portal.

Starting next autumn, the production and use of the following products will no longer be possible: • PET bottles for the food industry (except for blue, white, green, brown and colourless bottles) • PET packaging with PVC labels (except for shrink sleeves).

The reason for the restriction is that the product's waste cannot be recycled or disposed of. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy hopes that this decision will help reduce the consumption of non-recyclable, unrecycled PET packaging and switch to environmentally friendly products. It will also reduce the load on waste disposal sites and the impact on the environment, the department told Interfax.

In March, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced plans to ban some types of plastic packaging. From 2025, PET packaging labeled with adhesives that are insoluble in aqueous or alkaline solutions will be banned. It is expected that 17 types of packaging will be banned by 2030. Meanwhile, players in the polymer industry are trying to revise the requirements for environmental fees on packaging as part of extended producer responsibility.
