Foma and Evsenia: How Creative Petersburgers Named Their Children in 2024
This year, Petersburgers more often chose original names for their children from ancient Greek and ancient Slavic culture. The Committee for Civil Status Registration shared with Komsomolskaya Pravda interesting conclusions made by its experts from the beginning of the year to the end of September.
Among boys, two "ancient Greek" names stand out. There are the names Hector, after the famous warrior, and Socrates, after the great philosopher. The list also includes Spartak, a name that can be associated with both ancient heroes and famous football clubs.
Among the ancient Slavic names are Vseslav, Iliya, Foma and Svetozar. Also notable are unusual male names such as Leopold, Sylvester, Vikenty and Danis.
As for girls, the most unusual newborn was a girl named April. The other parents chose the names Nikolina, Evsenia, and Rossiyana. Interestingly, one family wrote the diminutive form of the name Masha on their daughter's birth certificate.
Some parents also recalled long-forgotten names of their daughters, such as Stella, Euphrosyne, Janina and Fevronia, which clearly refer to Orthodox saints.
