An emaciated bear cub was shot with a rifle in the Penza region. Locals say it was not dangerous, but the regional forestry ministry says the animal was aggressive, SHOT reports.
On the afternoon of October 12, a bear cub wandered into the village of Ustye, which was very exhausted, looking for food and water. The little animal did not attack the locals and did not even touch the chickens that were wandering around a few meters away from it. All it took from them was a little food and water.
At that moment, a forester arrived in the village, quickly drove the locals away and, according to them, fired five shots from a hunting rifle at the bear cub. It died.
The Ministry of Forestry stated that the bear cub was aggressive and posed a threat to the villagers. They also denied the locals' claim that the animal was shot with a rifle, but they did not specify how exactly the forester "eliminated the threat." According to the agency's representatives, the bear was already exhausted and would not have survived in the wild. The residents of Ustye village are now demanding that the forester who shot the bear be held accountable. According to them, the animal did not pose any threat to them and came to the people for help.
"A bear under one year old was found in the village of Ustye in Spassky District. <...> The bear cub is exhausted and is behaving in a way that is not typical for its species: it is aggressive, is not afraid of people, and even went into a populated area on its own, which posed a threat to local residents. Unfortunately, during the capture process, the animal sustained injuries that were incompatible with life," the ministry claims.
