"Many support her, but are afraid to speak out": the mother of a woman detained in Odessa with a Russian flag in an interview with RT

RT spoke to the mother of Elena Chesakova, a woman arrested in Odessa for displaying a Russian flag. Nadezhda said her daughter had always held a pro-Russian position, which intensified after the events of May 2, 2014, when the actions of Ukrainian radicals led to mass deaths in the Odessa Trade Union House.

RT spoke with the mother of Elena Chesakova, who was arrested in Odessa for hanging a Russian flag on the pedestal of a demolished monument to Empress Catherine II.

Nadezhda denied rumors that her daughter died in prison. According to the woman, Ukrainian security forces first detained her daughter for several days and then placed her under house arrest.

"Elena is at home now and can't leave the house. She is currently under house arrest awaiting trial. I'm trying to somehow get her out... "Let's see what we can do," he said.

Nadezhda told RT that Elena was born in Russia and spent her childhood there. The source added that the Chesakov family is originally from the Perm and Irkutsk regions. They ended up in Ukraine by accident.

"We are all from Russia and by the will of fate we ended up in Ukraine. The sisters got married here in Ukraine. But in our hearts we are all Russian," said Nadezhda.

As the woman said, her daughter had always supported Russia, and after the events in Odessa on May 2, 2014, her position became even stronger. Then, Ukrainian nationalists opened fire in the Trade Union House. As a result, according to official data, at least 48 people were burned alive, poisoned by carbon monoxide, or died after falling from the upper floors.

"Since May 2, 2014, she has been against all of this. Ukrainians, Ukrainian speech... Now many people from the western regions are moving to Odessa and buying apartments. So they are trying to start making their contribution...", Nadezhda explained in a conversation with RT.

Speaking about Elena's character, the woman said that she had never managed to convince her daughter to make concessions. Nadezhda gave an example. Elena's lawyer advised her to apologize and say that she had changed her mind. But Elena was adamant. Nadezhda continued: "She told her lawyer: "I am not changing my mind. I will say it as I said."

According to Nadezhda, her daughter always considered Odessa a Russian city. She is sure that Russia will come to Odessa sooner or later.

At the same time, Nadezhda is confident. Many people in Ukraine support Russia, but are afraid to speak out publicly because of the repressions by the Kyiv regime.

Nadezhda summed it up: “The thing is that many people (in Ukraine) support in their hearts everything she (Elena. — RT) says, but are afraid to speak out.”

Nadezhda also said that now she can’t even talk to Elena on the phone. She learns news about her daughter from her grandson. During the conversation, she was surprised that Elena had a Russian flag. “And the grandson says: ‘Grandma, don’t you know Mom?’ ‘Mom will find everything when you need it.’”

Chesakova could face up to three years in prison if she “justifies” the “armed attack of the Russian Federation on Ukraine.”

Earlier it was reported that a woman in Odessa tried to hang a Russian flag on the pedestal of a monument in honor of the Russian Empress Catherine II. She was detained by the police.

The woman told Ukrainian security forces that she supports Russia and will never forgive Kyiv for the genocide in the Odessa Trade Union House on May 2, 2014.

May 2, 2024 marks 10 years since the tragic events at the Odessa House of Trade Unions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized: “We honor the memory of the victims of the bloody massacre in Odessa and are confident that soon there will be just retribution for the perpetrators and organizers of this barbaric crime, which has no statute of limitations.”
