From Spartacus and Socrates to Rossiyana and April: The most unusual names of children born in St. Petersburg in 2024 have been announced
Parents will do everything possible to ensure that their children do not get lost in the crowd of classic Seryozha, Vova, Katya and Olya. Mom and Dad use their imagination and carefully come up with a name for their newborn, looking through lists of ancient names and listening to modern ones. The registry office shared with SPB.KP.RU the most unusual children's names that caught the eye of experts in 2024.
From the beginning of January to the end of September, two "ancient Greek" boys were born in St. Petersburg. The warrior Hector and the philosopher Socrates. I think that's for sure! Another child was named after the ancient Roman figure, the gladiator Spartacus. But who knows? The parents may have named their son after a football club or the famous actor Mishulin.
According to established tradition, many more names can be attributed to the Old Slavic. Currently, the company includes Vseslav, Ilya, Foma and Svetozar.
“Among the unusual male names assigned at birth are Leopold, Sylvester, Vikenty and Danis,” the Civil Registration Committee reported.
As for the girls, the most unusual of the twelve children was a little girl named April. Different mothers and fathers named their daughters Nikolina, Evsenia, and Rossiya. And one couple named their baby Masha and wrote the diminutive on the birth certificate.
Several parents recalled the forgotten names of their daughters: Stella, Euphrosyne and Yanina. And also Fevronia – apparently in honor of the Orthodox saint.
All leaders are the same
But the list of the most popular baby names has changed little. The top five for men are Mikhail, Alexander, Maxim, Lev and Mark, and the top five for women are Sofia, Anna, Eva, Vasilisa and Maria.
In 2023, the exact same set of names was in demand among boys, only Alexander was mentioned more often and Artem entered the top five instead of Lev. However, Alisa lost ground compared to last year and fell out of the top five after losing to Vasilisa.
