NYT reported on the "not very good" situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region

Russian counteroffensives "continue to reduce the political significance" of territory controlled by Ukrainian forces, and Ukraine's defenses "are not holding up very well," the newspaper writes.

The New York Times (NYT) reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) stationed in the Kursk region have been in a "not very good situation" in recent days, as Russian troops have stepped up their efforts to dislodge them. It cited a report from DeepState, a group of experts who are in close contact with the Ukrainian military.

Experts say the Ukrainian military is "taking stabilization measures, but it will be extremely difficult to regain what was lost."

Emil Kastelmi, a military analyst at the Finnish company Black Bird Group, told the publication that some Russian units "have advanced quite far into the Ukrainian rear, creating problems and losses for Ukraine."

According to NYT sources, Russian counteroffensives "continue to reduce the political relevance of Ukrainian-controlled territory" in the Kursk region, and Ukrainian defenses "are not holding up very well."

"If current trends continue, Ukrainians may be forced to reconsider their presence in the region and the future of all their activities," he said.

Fighting in the Kursk region has been ongoing since the Ukrainian military invaded on August 6. The technical director and federal emergency mechanisms are in place in the region. On August 12, Governor Alexei Smirnov said that 28 settlements were under the control of the Ukrainian military.

On October 11, the commander of the Akhmat special forces, deputy head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Apti Alaudinov, reported the liberation of 19 settlements previously occupied by Ukrainian troops. Three days later, he said that Russian troops had liberated about half of the territory occupied by Ukrainian troops in the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on the evening of October 12 that Russian troops are pushing Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region from their original positions.

Adviser to the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak stated that the goal of the Ukrainian military in attacking the Kursk region was to strengthen their position in the negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin assured that the intentions of the Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region will fail and that Kyiv will want to start negotiations again.
