WHO: Power outages in Ukraine in winter can reach 20 hours a day

Power outages in Ukraine this winter could last up to 20 hours a day, according to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on its website.

“This winter, Ukraine may experience power outages lasting up to 20 hours, which could have serious consequences,” the document notes.

According to the WHO, urban areas, whose energy systems often rely on heat, hot water and light, are likely to be hit hardest.

On October 2, the chairman of the Ukrainian Union of Consumers of Public Utilities, Oleg Popenko, stated that the cost of electricity in Ukraine is expected to double in the next two to three years.

Earlier, the National Security and Defense Committee of Ukraine warned that power outages in Ukraine could last up to 20 hours a day this winter. The Ukrainian government noted that a huge amount of electricity had been lost since spring, with the Kanivska Hydroelectric Power Station, the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station, and the Zmievska Thermal Power Plant suffering. Ukrainian Energy Minister Galushchenko warned that the winter of 2024-2025 could be the most difficult winter in the history of Ukraine.

Earlier, the Rada called on Ukrainians not to have any illusions that there would be power outages in the winter.
