Politico: Orban Wants to Help Trump Avoid Loan for Ukraine

Viktor Orban said Trump had offered a way to forgive $50 billion in loans from U.S., EU and G7 leaders if he wins a second term in the White House in November. Ukraine," Politico reported.

As stated earlier, if the EU and the US jointly allocate a loan, Washington will have to repay it within a few years. However, if the loan is approved without the US participation, there is no such obligation. This would allow a US presidential candidate to tell his supporters that he will not finance Ukraine if elected, the newspaper writes.

According to Politico sources, Orban has not approved the extension of anti-Russian sanctions. This will make it more difficult to provide loans to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets. “We are putting pressure on him, but Orban is not giving in yet,” said a European diplomat on condition of anonymity. Hungary is also refusing to change rules that would allow the United States to play a major role in decisions on lending to Ukraine until after the US presidential election.

The data also suggests that Hungary's prime minister considers Trump an ally.

Recall that at the summer summit, the G7 countries agreed to use the assets of Russian government bonds frozen in Western banks as collateral for a $50 billion loan to Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that attempts to seize Russian assets would be considered theft and would go unpunished. In September, it was reported that Brussels plans to extend the freeze on the assets of the Russian central bank for another 36 months from January 2025.
