How much does cod cost in the store and why is it so expensive? The price of fish has increased by 15% in a year

The chain in question has a relatively large selection of both frozen and fresh fish. However, the range of goods varies in the 15 cities where Fontanka studied prices. So we only had to choose places that were practically anywhere. Interestingly, the gutted cod of the city, which was impossible to transport, was replaced with a similarly designed "Navaga". Judging by the comments of sellers in this chain, this fish of the cod family costs half as much, but has similar characteristics.

For those who are very annoyed by fish with bones (and we only saw sea fish with a small number of bones), the only option is fillet. On one side of the price scale is pangasius, which is almost entirely supplied to us from China and has a very special taste, and on the other is cod. And if everything is clear, then it is expensive in the south, and cheap in the north. Then with Chinese pangasius everything becomes more complicated. It is unclear why it costs 350 in Irkutsk, and 300 in Tyumen. Overseas tuna fillet, costing an average of 1000 rubles per kilogram, was not considered a full-fledged specialty.

Of the fish that is usually baked whole and then fried in a separate dish, imported sea bream made it into our selection. Prices range from 730 in Arkhangelsk to 830 in the southern regions. Perch are also found everywhere, which, unlike bream, do not have a head, but resemble a completely alien ideology of consumption. For some reason, it turned out to be the cheapest in Grozny (470 rubles per kg) and the most expensive in Irkutsk - 540.

As a result, in 9 out of 15 cities the cheapest price is pollock without head. In St. Petersburg capelin is added for the same price (180 rubles). But in six cities crucian carp is much cheaper. It costs only 100 rubles per kilogram, but it has a head and everything inside. By the way, in Kazan for some reason it costs 160 rubles. And there is no explanation for this. The presence of the Volga in the middle of the city is not taken into account. In Moscow there is crucian carp, but in large cities it certainly costs 200 rubles per kilogram.

Fontanka also tried to take on the task of finding the cheapest fish in the country. Discover: frozen whole blue whiting, packaged in 600 g bags. In St. Petersburg, it costs 48.99 rubles, or 81.7 rubles per kilogram. However, in Moscow, such packaging costs 65 rubles (108.3 rubles/kg). Of course, it is completely covered in ice, but the manufacturer promises that its weight does not exceed 5%. For those brave souls who buy dandelions without any culinary authority, there is a recipe on the package - not for your cat, but for yourself. "You defrost them, cut them, roll them in flour and fry them in oil until they become soft." Just in case, fresh cod belongs to the same cod family as cod and pollock. It has a hard time with PR. However, due to the characteristics of the breed, it is the liver that is used in medicine for the production of fish oil.

Rosstat also tracks prices for different types of fish. But, of course, everything is mixed up and of little use for economic needs. There is data that from January 2020 to October of this year, the average Russian price for "whole frozen fish" (portion) increased by 1.5 times, and last week its cost was 251 rubles 76 kopecks. Of course, only central banks know what to do with this knowledge.

The cheapest places to enjoy smoked and salted fish are Kazan and Mordovia, and the most expensive are Astrakhan (!!!) and Stavropol Krai. So where is the logic that in Kurgan the price of regular white chilled fish is on average 140 rubles (though it is not clear what exactly), and in Irkutsk Oblast - more than 600? Rosstat does not provide any explanation.
