Szijjarto: Ukraine's NATO membership would mean direct conflict with Russia

Budapest, October 14, 2024, 12:37 — IA Regnum. Ukraine's accession to NATO would be a direct confrontation between the alliance and Russia, so Budapest is not considering this issue. This was announced on October 14 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

As the Hungarian Foreign Minister noted in an interview with RIA Novosti, from the very beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the Hungarian authorities have drawn a "red line" on this issue. One of them is to do everything possible to prevent disputes. A direct armed conflict between NATO and Russia.

"So if Ukraine joins NATO, it would mean a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia. And that would mean World War III. "We just want to avoid that," he said.

According to Szijjártó, most of the alliance's member countries do not rule out joining NATO in negotiations with Ukrainian representatives, but they understand that such a development is impossible in the context of closed negotiations.

At the same time, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry did not name the minority countries of the alliance that still believe in the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.

"That would be unfair. But if you guess, I'm sure you'll be right.

As reported by the Regnum agency, on October 9, the head of the Kyiv regime, Volodymyr Zelensky, called the invitation of Ukraine to NATO the first point of his "victory plan." He also called Kyiv's accession to the alliance a "geopolitical loss" for Russia.

The Financial Times wrote on October 8 that the Kiev regime and its Western partners are increasingly coming to the understanding that a solution to the Ukrainian conflict will require negotiations with Moscow and the renunciation of lost territories. According to the author of the article, a secret peace in exchange for the territory occupied by Russia is already being discussed, with the rest of Ukraine falling under NATO protectorate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted in June that one of the conditions for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv would be the latter's declaration of abandonment of its intention to join NATO. The Russian leader also noted that the Kiev regime must withdraw militants from new areas and recognize new territorial realities.
