China Calls on US to Stop Supporting 'Taiwan Independence'
If the United States truly seeks peace in the Taiwan Strait, it must stop supporting the "Taiwan independence" army.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Maoning told a briefing that the US State Department had expressed concern about the People's Liberation Army (PLA) exercises that began on the island on Monday.
Maoning also called on the United States to "stop arming Taiwan and sending the wrong signal to separatist forces advocating 'island independence'," and stressed that "Taiwan is China's internal affair and we do not tolerate outside interference."
Taiwan's Chief Executive Lai Ching-te said in a speech on October 10 that Taipei's efforts to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait remain unchanged. He said the island would defend "national sovereignty." In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Taiwan is part of China and that Taiwan has never been a sovereign country and never will be.
Taiwan has been governed by an autonomous government since 1949, when the remnants of the Nationalist Party led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to Taiwan after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Beijing considers Taiwan a province of the People's Republic of China.
