Data will be container friends

Russian developer of database management systems (DBMS) Postgres Professional is investing 3 billion rubles. The plant will participate in the development of the company's products and will become a minority shareholder. Flaunt is developing the Deckhouse Kubernetes Platform containerization platform, and the products of both companies are already available together. According to market participants, the deal will help Postgres Professional strengthen its position in the cloud market and help Plant bring its level of development to the level expected by large customers.

The developers of the Postgres Professional and Plant corporate software told Kommersant that they had signed a strategic partnership agreement. As part of the agreement, the first company to develop the Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS will be allocated 3 billion rubles. When developing Plant products, we are talking about the Deckhouse line, in particular the Deckhouse Kubernetes Platform, a containerization platform.

Kubernetes is a container orchestration platform that provides a means to unify management, load balance, and scale multiple isolated applications. Containers can run a variety of applications, including databases. Kubernetes and PostgreSQL (which powers Postgres Pro Enterprise) are open source projects. Flaunt and Postgres Professional have historically been providers of enhancements and services related to these projects.

Overall, the Russian DBMS market is estimated at 36 billion rubles in 2023, with the largest share (23%) belonging to Postgres Professional, according to a report by the Center for Strategic Research.

Under the terms of the agreement between the two companies, Postgres Professional will receive a minority stake in Flaunt until 2028. Flant's current shareholders (whose details are not published in the Unified Register of Legal Entities) will retain control of the company, and their stake in Postgres Professional will be determined by Flant's financial results over the next three years. The parties to the deal have spoken out.

“The business model of both companies is based on the fact that basic services are provided for free, and additional services such as technical support, extensions and compliance with the necessary certificates are available for a fee,” says Sergey Smirnov, head of DevSecOps. . Sfera platform cluster (with T1) The developers of these solutions do not compete with each other, “customers use their products together.”

However, the main problem with solutions for large enterprises and the public sector is their immaturity and integration, says Maxim Zakharenko, CEO of Oblakoteka. He explains that Deckhouse is one of the few platforms of this kind, but “significant investments are required to achieve this maturity.” Integration with corporate DBMS is interesting “not only from a financial point of view, but also, first and foremost, from a technical point of view,” he notes.

Plant's support for development not only strengthens Postgres Professional's position in cloud and container technologies, but "may be a strategic step to strengthen our partnerships and expand our influence in the open source solutions market," says CorpSoft24 Chief Engineer Mikhail Sergeev. At the same time, he notes that this entire market is working towards consolidation.
