It is dangerous to go down into the cellar – summer residents are asked to be careful when storing their harvest

Representatives of the Moscow Region Fire and Rescue Service have warned Russians about the dangers of poor ventilation and gas contamination in basements where harvests are stored, DEITA.RU reports, citing RIA Novosti.

Rescuers have called on Russians to take safety precautions when descending from storage areas for vegetables, fruits and other agricultural crops. The fact is that deadly gases can accumulate in the country's basements. They are formed when organic matter decomposes in the soil and there is insufficient ventilation in the premises.

Before going down to the basement, Russians recommend airing it out for a few minutes. Open the door and wait. After that, you need to make sure that there is no carbon dioxide or methane in the storage area. To do this, you can place a burning candle in a bucket and lower it down with a rope. If the candle starts to burn poorly or goes out completely, it does not have enough oxygen and cannot be brought into the room.

To speed up ventilation, you can use improvised objects to "move" the air into the basement and create air circulation. This must be done so that the gases can escape faster and fill the room with oxygen.

Instead of going down to the basement alone, it is better to have someone upstairs to call for help if necessary.

The most important thing you should not do right away, without checking the building, is to go down alone and turn on electrical appliances, including lights, or start a fire.
