Scientists have identified a new risk of dementia

Lonely people are at much higher risk of developing dementia. This is the conclusion reached by American scientists from the University of Florida based on their research, DEITA.RU reports with reference to NEWSDATA.

Scientists studied patient data from different countries and analyzed health indicators of 600,000 patients. During the study, experts paid special attention to some indicators of the participants, including social skills, spending time with family and communicating with others.

Dementia was found to be 31% more common in “lonely people.” Moreover, such people have a 15% higher risk of cognitive impairment, including poor memory, mental ability, speech, attention, and motor problems.

According to scientists, the lack of use of cognitive abilities and the decrease in brain activity weakens brain function. Lonely people do not have the opportunity to use it, since they communicate with few people. Against the background of this "stagnation" brain diseases develop.
