Protection of the Holy Mother of God: how to determine what winter will be like based on one day - folk signs

In mid-October, on the 14th, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God. On this day, people attend vigils, pray for loved ones, or light candles to get married sooner. Moreover, this day was associated with many signs concerning the weather, determining what kind of winter it would be.

During my intercession, I believed that whatever the weather was, it would be like that for all three months of winter. Depending on the direction of the wind, they could also predict what would happen in the near future. For example, if it was blowing from the east or west, there would be a harsh winter ahead, warm in the south, and snowy in the north. They also paid attention to the birds. The cranes had flown away before October 14. This means that although it will be cold in winter, it will be warm after the intercession. If it does not snow on this day, it will not snow until December.

This day is also associated with various prohibitions. For example, like many other Orthodox holidays, swearing, foul language, drinking alcohol and overeating were prohibited. But in addition to this, people believed that one should not refuse hospitality on Pokrov. Otherwise, you may end up alone for the rest of your life. They also advise not to borrow or lend money, so as not to live in poverty for the next year.

Demetrius Saturday is coming soon. This is the day of remembrance of fallen soldiers and their deceased loved ones. The date of this anniversary is transitional and depends on the birthday of the holy martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. We tell you when Demetrius Saturday will be in 2024 and what signs and traditions are associated with it.
