Thousands of Mysterious 'Living Needles' Wash Up on Beach

Thousands of spiny sea snails have washed up on Thai beaches.

Residents of Pranburi district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province in Thailand have discovered thousands of "live needles" on a beach, Tigerin reports.

On October 8, the mysterious creatures washed up on a 5km-long beach near the mouth of the Pranburi River. Tourists and locals began posting photos and videos of the strange, transparent-needle-like mollusk on social media.

Marine experts have suggested that it was the sea snails of the genus Creceis, a member of the order Pteropoda, that eventually reached our shores. In 2021, thousands of the creatures washed up on Bangkort Beach in Thailand, near Pranburi. The sea snails then began to bother locals. Environmental activist Promsing Singhaseni said: “The fisherman said he hadn’t seen anything like this for decades.

Now one of the viral videos has been posted by kiteboarder Noah Varina, who says that with the help of friends, she carefully cleaned the creatures out of her wetsuit and filled the entire pond on the beach.

Beachgoers have been warned that the snails are particularly dangerous to children as they can pierce their skin. Experts have advised against entering the water until the creature has disappeared. The reason for their mass appearance on local beaches is still unknown.

Thousands of rare jellyfish have been reported to be swarming the beaches of Britain's Isles of Scilly, with photographer Nikki Banfield saying she had never seen so many of the creatures.
