Police detain two young men after swindling a Muscovite out of 5.6 million rubles

Police have detained two young men accused of stealing more than 5.6 million rubles from Moscow pensioners. Vladimir Vasenin, director of the information and public relations department of the capital's Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, told the Moscow agency:

He said the 74-year-old woman received a Messenger message from her former manager telling her she needed to call law enforcement. The pensioner then received a call from an unknown person telling him he needed to declare his savings to verify his financial situation. The woman also sent several links to apps she had installed on her phone.

Then, following the instructions of the criminal, the Muscovite handed over the saved currency and rubles to the arriving courier, and Vasenin continued on his way. Realizing that he had become a victim of a fraudster, the pensioner contacted the police.

According to the agency's source, law enforcement officers identified the suspects and detained one of them on Komsomolskaya Square. He was identified as a 20-year-old man from St. Petersburg. The second suspect, an 18-year-old guy from the Vologda Region, was detained in the Moscow Region.

As Vasenin said, in conversations with the police, the prisoners explained that they had discovered criminal activity on the Internet. On the instructions of the curator, one of the attackers took money from the victim, and the second accompanied him. After that, the young people converted the stolen goods into cryptocurrency and sent it to their accomplices, leaving part of the amount as compensation.

A criminal case of fraud was opened. The court remanded the accused in custody. The police are currently checking whether the young people were involved in similar crimes and identifying their accomplices.

Earlier, telephone scammers posing as law enforcement agencies deceived a 69-year-old resident of the Moscow region and stole more than 13 million rubles from her. They misled her by calling her and saying that she was required to change the cadastral number of her apartment.

As a result, the woman sold the property and transferred the proceeds from the transaction to the account of a 50-year-old man from the Chelyabinsk region. He is already in custody.
