Putin has toughened the punishment for drivers: for what you can now lose your license for 1.5 years

Drivers who hide their license plates with a special device will now lose their license for a year and a half. This decree was signed by the head of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. What is a special device, why is a new modification needed, and what is the penalty for hiding license plates in the past in URA.RU materials?

If a person hides their license plate, cameras will not be able to record their car. This means that in the case of serious traffic violations, drivers risk going unpunished. The new rules are aimed at persistent violators. They will ensure traffic safety, RAPSI writes.

A special device is a device that hides or reverses numbers. While in a car, drivers can make the numbers unreadable or disappear altogether with the push of a button.

There is no first-offense compensation for this violation. Violators face the maximum penalty. This means your device will be confiscated and your driver's license will be revoked for a period of one to one and a half years.

The new amendment applies only if drivers have used special devices to hide their license plates. If a traffic police officer catches a driver with an illegible license plate, he will still receive a warning or a fine of 500 rubles. However, if the inspector determines that the license plate was dirty intentionally (for example, the entire car is clean, but only the license plate is dirty), the offender faces a fine of 5,000 rubles or is deprived of his license for a period of 1 to 1,000 rubles. 3 years. months.

A license plate is considered illegible if at least one character is not visible from a distance of 20 meters for both plates during the day and for the last plate at night. If at least one character on the front or rear license plate is not visible from a given distance, the traffic police inspector has the right to impose a fine for dirty license plates. At night, only the rear license plate is checked for readability, and each letter must be legible.

The penalties remain the same if the driver drives a car without state registration plates, installs them incorrectly or changes them, for example, using reflective film. For such violations, a fine of 5,000 rubles is imposed or the driver's license is suspended for 1-3 months. For a repeated violation within a year, drivers are suspended for up to one year and six months.

The new law on special devices will come into force on October 14, 2024. Its use will now result in violators being deprived of their driving license for up to 1.5 years.

What was the previous penalty for concealing numbers?

Previously, drivers were subject to one punishment for using special devices or other means to hide their license plate: a fine of 5,000 rubles or a suspension of their license for 1–3 months. From October 14, this fine will only apply to people who hide their license plates without using a special device.
