Putin toughens penalties for driving without state registration plates

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill toughening the punishment for concealing license plates to the point of depriving a driver of his or her license for up to one and a half years. This document has been published on the website of the official publication of the normative legal act.

Previously, driving with dirty or illegible license plates was punishable by a warning or a fine of 500 rubles. If you drive without a number, or hide or deliberately change a number plate, you can be deprived of your driving license for a period of 1 to 3 months or fined 5,000 rubles. A fine of 25,000 rubles was imposed for installing a fake number plate, and driving with such a number was deprived of your license for a period of six months to a year.

Laws signed by heads of state strengthen these accountability measures. Now, if you use a device that does not allow you to read or change the national symbol, you will be punished by confiscation of the device and the loss of your license for a period of one to one and a half years.

Repeated driving without a license plate or using a masking device may also result in a license revocation for up to 1 year and 6 months.
