Putin signs law on deprivation of rights for up to 1.5 years for concealing car numbers

President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the use of devices that hide license plates for up to 1.5 years. The document was published on the website of the official publication of the normative legal act.

Previously, drivers were given a warning or a fine of 500 rubles for driving with dirty license plates. Driving without license plates, concealing or deliberately changing license plates can result in drivers being deprived of their license for a period of 1 to 3 months or a fine of 5,000 rubles. A fine of 2,500 rubles was imposed for installing fake license plates, and driving with such license plates was subject to deprivation of license for a period of six months to one year.

The law signed by the president toughens administrative liability measures for driving vehicles with national plates that use devices capable of preventing, changing or hiding identification. This concerns frames and devices that reverse the numbers. The control is carried out using a remote control from the room.

This may result in confiscation of the device and deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle for a period of 1 to 1.5 years. The law also provides for a penalty in the form of deprivation of rights for up to 1.5 years for repeated driving of a vehicle without a license plate or concealment.

On October 9, the Federation Council approved a proposal to increase the term of deprivation of driving license to 1.5 years for driving a vehicle equipped with a special device that covers the national registration plate (NRPL).

Earlier, People's Deputy Vitaliy Milonov proposed banning Ukrainian license plates on cars traveling in Russia. He is convinced that in Ukraine, some people deliberately do not change their state license plates because they are not read by road surveillance cameras. Some drivers also assume that with such a number, they can return to Ukraine or go to Europe.
