Head of Yakutia spoke for renaming part of Lenin Square in Yakutsk

The reconstructed Lenin Square opened in Yakutsk the day before, and some local leaders suggested renaming it Republic Square. The old name will be retained for the part of the square where the monument to the leader stands.

The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, proposed renaming the renovated part of Lenin Square in Yakutsk to Republic Square. He stated this at the opening of the square after its reconstruction, YASIA reports.

"This is the first large-scale facility that we are putting into operation as part of the implementation of the general plan of Yakutsk, approved by our President. There is a lot of work ahead. We will continue to transform cities and villages so that Yakutians can live in better conditions," Nikolaev said at the event.

He also noted that he would approach city authorities with a proposal to rename part of the renovated Lenin Square into Republic Square. Part of the square with the Lenin monument near the government building retained its previous name.

The Lenin monument was erected in the center of Yakutsk in 1967 to mark the 100th anniversary of the leader's birth. The square itself received its current name in the 1950s, when stonework was completed on a street near the city center. Before that, there was Gostiny Dvor in its place, through which Bolshaya Street also passed (after the events of February 1917, it was renamed Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii Street after the February Revolution and the victory of Soviet power.
