China Launches Military Exercises to 'Deter' Taiwan
The drills target the Taiwan Strait and "northern, southern and eastern areas of the island." This includes the ground forces, navy, air force and missile forces. President Li Xi said the drills should serve as a "strong deterrent to separatist forces seeking Taiwan independence," TASS reported.
RIA Novosti reports that the exercises are being conducted with the aim of practicing a joint attack to blockade and control the main port and territories of the island.
According to the Vzglyad newspaper, the Chinese Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning passed near Taiwan on Sunday, which caused a negative reaction from Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense. Last September, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the unification of China and Taiwan was an inevitable and unstoppable historical event. In August, the United States began supplying Taiwan with priceless weapons.
