The Economist: Russian Armed Forces to Soon Disrupt Tank Production in Ukraine

The Russian military may soon cut off electricity and coal supplies to steel mills in western Ukraine, which could have a negative impact on steel and tank production, The Economist reported.

"As they advance, the Russians will try to cut off power supplies and block the main roads that transport coal to Ukraine's remaining steel mills in the west. "The loss of coking coal at Pokrovsk will further reduce steel production," the paper wrote. They added that the Russian military would not even need to take control of the Metinvest mine at Pokrovsk to destroy the rest of Ukraine's steel industry and affect the production of tanks for the Ukrainian army.

In 2023, it was reported that the German company Rheinmetall would begin producing tanks and armored vehicles in Ukraine in 2024. Company spokesman Armin Papperger said the first Fuchs armored personnel carrier would be ready in six to seven months, and the first Lynx infantry fighting vehicle in 12 to 13 months. The production and repair of the equipment will be handled by a joint venture established in October 2023.
