Ultimately, to get a bountiful and healthy harvest, the plants need to be properly rooted before winter sets in. It is also important to choose the time of planting so that there are no strong and persistent frosts the next day. How to prepare garlic for winter planting
"To do this, place the heads selected as planting material in a cool place with a temperature of about 5°C and store them for 2-3 weeks," the expert says. - For planting, take large cloves. It can be slightly disinfected, but does not require serious processing. Garlic is free of pest larvae and infections.
Place the selected cloves on the ground at a distance of 15 cm from each other and at a depth of about 6 cm, making them a little deeper. To protect the root system from freezing, cover the garlic with roofing felt or film and sprinkle with mulch. When you come to the flower bed in the spring, remove them so that the shoots appear faster.
"Planting garlic after potatoes or onions is not recommended, as there is a high risk of "exchange" of diseases between crops, including nematodes, fusarium, etc.," the department says. - Do not plant winter garlic in areas that were fertilized this year. Garlic has abundant tops, loose heads, and its resistance to fungal diseases is weakened. The place for the garlic bed should be chosen in a well-lit place with plenty of sunlight.
One of the main helpers of a gardener planting winter garlic is the weather forecast. Based on this, you can decide when it is best to start. This is because it is necessary to start at least two weeks before the onset of persistent frosts. If you make a mistake in your calculations, the garlic will freeze all winter, and you will not be able to harvest it.
The gardener's second true friend is the lunar calendar. It is believed that the phase of the Earth's satellite is important in any gardening business. There are still many favorable dates for sowing garlic until autumn-winter 2024: October 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29, 30, 31 and October 2. Sun, October 3, 6, 7, 8, 15. , November 24, 25, 29, 30.
However, regardless of the lunar calendar, it should depend mainly on the outside temperature. It is clear that the last days of November when planting garlic for the winter are relevant for those who have a summer house in the south.
