WP: Netanyahu ready to strike only at Iran's military infrastructure

The Israeli prime minister has taken a moderate stance in talks with the US president and promised not to attack Iran's oil or nuclear infrastructure, but a retaliatory strike is still necessary. Otherwise, inaction will be seen as weakness.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Biden administration that he is prepared to attack Iran's military infrastructure, but not its oil or nuclear infrastructure, the Washington Post reports. The response is to Iran's missile attack on Israel on October 1.

According to one of the newspaper's sources, the Israeli prime minister "took a more moderate position" in negotiations with the US president. He promised that the retaliatory attacks would not affect the upcoming US presidential elections.

WP noted that as a concession to Netanyahu, Biden decided to send Israel the THAAD missile defense system, which Israel requested several weeks ago. The Pentagon previously said the US would finally begin delivering the systems.

According to Washington Post sources, the IDF plans to strike before the US elections, otherwise Israel's long-standing lack of response "could be interpreted as weakness," Israeli journalist Mark Kotlarsky comments.

The Israeli Defense Ministry announced that the THAAD missile defense system will be deployed in Israel within days.
