Customers at popular supermarkets Perekrestok, Pyaterochka and VkusVill have complained of poisoning from marshmallows containing the sugar substitute maltitol. The Sokol factory, which produces sweets in the Moscow region town of Dmitrov, has accused people of overeating its products.

Following mass reports of poor health, Rospotrebnadzor conducted on-site inspections of companies, the Telegram channel Mash reports. The service's employees removed samples of baked goods from store shelves. The retail chain has now temporarily refused to sell Sokol products.

At the same time, the producers do not consider themselves guilty of mass poisoning. In his opinion, the buyer himself is responsible for what happened. It is believed that this plant is responsible for the overeating of sweets by Russians with diabetes. They indicated that one should not eat more than one marshmallow a day.

Dozens of people have complained of diarrhea and nausea after eating marshmallows.

The first reports of poisoning appeared on October 12. A customer of the VkusVill store felt ill after eating classic marshmallows. They experienced nausea and diarrhea. At the same time, according to the assurances of the injured Russian, the drugs did not help to reduce the pain.

They suggested that the cause of the accident could have been maltitol, an alcohol derived from starch that is used as a sugar substitute and sweetener. The substance has a laxative effect and causes diarrhea, so it is not recommended for children, teenagers and pregnant women.

Following the VkusVill customers, people who bought products at Pyaterochka and Perekrestok expressed their dissatisfaction. Dozens of people were injured. He experienced bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating the Giselle marshmallow, which is produced at the same factory where the classics are made.

The press service of the Russian retail supermarket chain reported that the information about mass poisoning from marshmallows is not true.

They said they had confirmed customer requests over the last four months of product sales. During that period, VkusVill received 32 requests. That's less than 0.3% of all purchases. Marshmallow contains maltitol, a sugar substitute. Although it's a legal additive, excessive consumption can have a laxative effect," the publication said.
