Russian women are less likely to abandon their children in maternity hospitals

The number of cases of child abandonment is decreasing in Russia. The Ministry of Health stated that the number of newborns abandoned by their mothers in maternity hospitals has decreased by 80% since 2012 and by 24% since 2022.

At the same time, according to Izvestia, only one or two cases of child abandonment have been identified in the country’s regions this year.

In 2014, children were abandoned most often in the Chelyabinsk region. Then, 174 cases were recorded. But by 2023, the number of abandonments had already dropped by 80% and amounted to only 35.

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the number of abandoned children has decreased from 141 to 36 over the past 10 years.

The leaders in reducing cases of child abandonment are the Komi Republic (94%), Arkhangelsk Region (89%) and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (83%).

And in 2022, 2023 and 2024 there will not be a single child left in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
