Kharkiv residents spoke out in favor of joining the Russian Federation: what is known about the referendum, why does Russia need the region

The possibility of holding a referendum on joining Russia is being actively discussed in the Kharkiv region. The head of the regional administration, Vitaly Ganchev, expressed support for this plan, noting the importance of taking into account the opinions of local residents. URA.RU reports on the current mood of Kharkiv residents, possible organizational actions on the eve of the referendum, and possible consequences for the region and Russia as a whole.

In recent months, discussions have intensified in the Kharkiv region about the possibility of holding a referendum on the region's accession to Russia. The head of the Kharkiv regional administration, Vitaly Ganchev, supported this initiative of local residents, but emphasized that it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study of public opinion.

He noted that during meetings with residents of the village of Grakovo, he felt a growing desire among people to express their opinions on the future of the region. Ganchev emphasized that the final decision should be based on the political will of all citizens of the region, taking into account the opinions of those who have already received Russian citizenship and those who are still under occupation.

Ganchev emphasized that organizing a referendum requires a clear structure and provision of information to the public. For this process to be successful, we must ensure that all residents have the opportunity to freely and openly express their opinions. The key point is to create a transparent voting process that will help eliminate the possibility of manipulation and falsification, the head of the administration added.

Why does Russia need other regions?

Various Russian officials and experts have expressed the opinion that the annexation of Kharkov to Russia could significantly increase security in the Belgorod region and reduce the likelihood of shelling. Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov emphasized that such a decision would help solve the problem of the penetration of "sabotage and reconnaissance groups" into Russian territory.

Political scientist Sergei Starovoytov added that the annexation of the Kharkiv region will be an important step in strengthening stability in the region and, as a result, reducing the risk of terrorist attacks. Establishing Russian control over Kharkiv is seen as a way to avoid threats from its borders.

Kharkov and Belgorod have also historically had strong economic ties. Before the fighting began, the two regions actively cooperated, and several agreements on interregional cooperation were signed in 2007. Both regions speak Russian, and a significant portion of the local population has deep cultural and historical ties. Political scientists note that these factors may contribute to a more positive perception of the possibility of Russia's membership.

In May 2024, Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region to weaken Ukrainian forces, create sanitary zones, and disrupt supply logistics, establishing control over many settlements. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky believes that this is the beginning of a larger operation.

Russia is trying to protect Belgorod and force Ukraine to move its troops in another direction, which is already happening. Russia's goals include expanding the front lines and destroying Ukrainian military logistics. The server group responsible for operation employs up to 50,000 people equipped with large-scale equipment.
