Putin supported the candidacy of Sports Minister Degtyarev for the post of head of the ROC

Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev recommended Sports Minister Mikhail Degaryov as a candidate for the post of Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). President Vladimir Putin said the proposal was worth considering. On October 15, ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov announced his resignation.

"This (the appointment of Mikhail Degtyarev. — Kommersant) will give us the opportunity to optimize the solution of all the tasks set before us. There are a lot of them, and sports power, on the one hand, will help to effectively create them for the benefit of our fatherland," Shamil Tarpishchev said at a meeting of the presidential committee for the development of physical culture and sports in Ufa.

"This proposal really deserves the most careful consideration. We need to think about it. You would be right. Perhaps, in today's conditions, it could be justified," Vladimir Putin responded.

At the meeting, Mikhail Degtyarev asked Vladimir Putin for permission to put himself forward as a candidate for the post of head of the Russian Orthodox Church. The minister emphasized: "I fully agree with the opinion that the autonomy of the Olympic Committee should be preserved." "In general, I support this," the Russian president said.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov, who has headed the Russian Orthodox Church since May 2018, said he would leave his post after the early elections on October 15. He explained that geopolitical challenges are leading to the optimization and centralization of management in key areas of activity, including high-performance sports. Kommersant's sources said that Mikhail Degtyarev could now become the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. He became the Minister of Sports in May last year.
