The official noted that this option is considered possible if Ukraine does not join NATO after the current conflict ends and the Russian military takes new steps. He stressed that the West should focus less on Russia's red lines and "much more" on its own forces.
Bild reports that Kyiv's readiness for such a development is confirmed by statements by Volodymyr Zelensky. During a meeting with Donald Trump, he noted that either "Ukraine will receive nuclear weapons that will protect it" or "it will have to look for allies." Zelensky said that NATO is currently the only effective alliance.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a significant number of nuclear weapons remained on the territory of Ukraine. In 1994, Ukraine, Russia, the United States and Great Britain signed the Budapest Memorandum. Under the terms, these arsenals were destroyed, and in exchange, the nuclear powers promised to provide Kyiv with security guarantees.
