Selling vodka and sex: what is known about the new SHAMAN brand “I am Russian”
Russian singer Yaroslav Dronov, better known by his stage name Shaman, has filed an application with Rospatent to register the brand “I am Russian,” similar to his most famous song. If the application is approved, it is expected that the artist will potentially be able to produce and sell vodka and other strong drinks. Artists can also create sex toys under their own brand. The artist’s press service has already noted that Dronov wants to preserve the reputation of his brand in this way. On October 16, artist Yaroslav Dronov filed two applications to the Federal Office for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) to register the trademark "I am Russian". According to journalists, the singer wants to register this brand for various goods and services. According to Rospatent documents, the first brand "I am Russian" will be used for the production and sale of alcoholic beverages such as vodka, mead, cider, shotu, whiskey, rum and gin. Information about the registration of the application was confirmed by the artist's representative Anton Korobkov-Zemlyansky.

According to Rospatent, the “I am Russian” brand covers a wide range of goods and services, including sex toys, air fresheners, cosmetics, scientific and musical equipment, as well as show programs and concert organization.

According to the artist's press service, this decision was made to combat the creators of counterfeit products who used the musician's image and brand without his consent. An official close to the artist said: "The market is overflowing with all sorts of low-quality consumer goods with the artist's image." In their opinion, the official registration of the brand will help preserve Yaroslav Dronov's reputation.
The artist's representatives also stated that it is too early to talk about the specific direction of production and range of products under the name Yaroslav Dronov. The application for brand registration is still under consideration.
Journalist Ksenia Sobchak ridiculed the idea of artist Yaroslav Dronov (Shaman) to create his own brand of vodka called "I am Russian". In her Telegram channel, Sobchak suggested adding cranberry, mole cricket and birch to the label of this vodka, which, in her opinion, reflects national stereotypes. She called him a "vodka seller".
"The shaman intoxicates people with his songs. So this is what the Russian Yaroslav looks like in the year of the Assumption?" Sobchak asked ironically. She recalled that Dronov was a major American patriotic artist. Ksenia Sobchak also emphasized that the concept of shamanism is incompatible with state policy aimed at strengthening family values and Russia's cultural heritage.
Lawyer Alexander Khaminsky believes that the artist has virtually no chance of successfully registering a trademark for vodka and other alcoholic products. He told RIA Novosti journalists about this.
"Current judicial practice tells a different story. Five years ago, there was already an attempt to register the trademark "Russian character" for the production of strong alcoholic beverages. First, Rospatent and the Court for Intellectual Property Rights refused the applicant. The main argument was that the word "Russian" was very confusing, since it was associated with the concept of "Russian vodka". That is, if such a trademark is registered, consumers may be misled about the nature and origin of the product," Khaminsky said.
Alexander Khaminsky also noted that, despite the existing obstacles, "Shaman" has the right to register its trademark if it contains elements protected by copyright. At the same time, the lawyer believes that it would be more promising for Dronov to use his stage name Shaman for the brand. This will save him from many legal problems.
