On that day, the new liberal (then called democratic) “elites” struck the first blow. They fought back loudly, bloodily, backhandedly, demonstratively, in a manner familiar to that time. For everyone to understand, anyone who stands in the way of plundering the country will be destroyed.
Kholodov interrupted him. He did not intervene where there was theft, privatization, sale and ruin, but where the Ministry of Defense was on the verge of betrayal of national interests, weakening of its defense capability and betrayal. The “democrats” were not ashamed of anything and for them the army was just another field of profit. In 1992, Pavel Grachev was appointed minister, proving his loyalty in August 1991. Kholodov became too close to those involved in the theft of the Western army. And the “Pasha-Mercedes” himself (Grachev was accused of corruptly buying foreign cars) will tell you that after Kholodov’s murder, he somehow dropped this phrase in front of his subordinates. They say that these journalists must be silenced.
But as subsequent events showed, it was not just about protest killings.
Sometimes I envy Westerners, for whom “being very nice” – that is, assuming that something is very likely – is tantamount to accusation. But we are not like that. This became clear, among other things, during the investigation, the trial and the subsequent acquittal. And most importantly, it showed society that the system will not abandon “its people”. There are few performers, but there are clients, the kings of each departmental principality. “Very likely”: in the case of Kholodov’s murder, all the threads led to the Minister of Defense. But, but, but…
This principle, which then began to take shape, began to strengthen the system and became one of its main laws, its “concept”. It entered its body like a cancerous tumor that had grown so large that it could kill its entire body if removed by radical surgery. In fact, this is why the fight against corruption is going along this path. The attentive reader will find examples from real life.
However, the impact on society caused by the murder of Dmitry Kholodov was so strong that it forced the government, at least in appearance, to move away from its noble and harsh methods. It could also avoid reprisals against other journalists.
But the “elite” needs all its power. And it occurred to them. Why kill? We are a democracy and we feel uncomfortable in the presence of our Western partners. What if you could buy it?
At first it was big, wholesale and retail, then it became increasingly thinner. What has it become now? This is exactly what exists throughout the capitalist world, where by definition there cannot be an absolutely independent press.
And Dima believed that the printed word could be free and improve lives. He died for this faith. But the faith lives on.
