NRK: Norwegian court awards $249,000 in compensation to son of former Russian Railways CEO Yakunin
A Norwegian court has ordered $249,000 in compensation to businessman Andrei Yakunin, who was arrested in 2022 on charges of launching a drone off the Svalbard archipelago. This was reported by the NRK television and radio company, citing the businessman's lawyer, John Christian Elden.
"Russian-British businessman Andrei Yakunin received compensation from the state in the amount of 2.7 million crowns ($249 thousand - ed.)," the data notes.
Yakunin and his lawyers insisted on paying more than 4.5 million crowns (US$423,000), but the court reduced the amount, NRK reports.
Yakunin was detained on suspicion of using a drone to take photographs in Svalbard, where he arrived on his yacht Firebird on October 17, 2022. He was accused of violating a ban on Russian drones flying in Norwegian airspace. The man has British-Russian citizenship. According to media reports, Yakunin himself was unaware of the ban and said that, in his opinion, it was more related to the UK than Russia.
