Netanyahu calls for immediate withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from Lebanon

According to the Israeli Prime Minister, this is necessary for their own security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to immediately withdraw peacekeepers from combat zones in southern Lebanon for their own safety, RIA Novosti reports.

Netanyahu noted that the Israeli military had previously repeatedly appealed to the UN about this, but it refused. According to the prime minister, the peacekeepers are a "human shield" for Lebanese Hezbollah.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon consists of approximately 11,000 military and civilian personnel from 48 countries. It is stationed there under a UN Security Council resolution of March 1978.
